HEF’s CLIN\u2122 (Controlled Liquid Ionic Nitrocarburizing) technologies consist of sustainable liquid nitrocarburizing treatments, thanks to the ECO-CLIN\u2122 process of recycling inputs. They are made available to the market through the brands ARCOR\u00ae, TENIFER\u00ae, SURSULF\u00ae, QPQ, TUFFTRIDE\u00ae, NUTRIDE\u00ae, MELONITE\u00ae. <\/p>

Liquid nitrocarburizing thermochemical treatment consists of the diffusion of nitrogen and carbon onto the surface of treated components in a liquid medium (molten salt with a high nitrogen content). These components are usually made of steel and cast iron. This diffusion process occurs uniformly between 520-630\u00b0C and provides the treated parts with two distinct surface regions: <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

  • Compound layer (white layer): surface layer composed primarily of iron nitrides and precipitated alloying elements depending on the substrate (e.g., chromium nitride for alloy steels). This layer has thicknesses of up to 30 microns and a region of surface porosity that ensures lubricant oil retention and improved tribological properties. It is primarily responsible for wear, corrosion, and seizure resistance properties, as well as reducing the coefficient of friction and adhesion to other metals (such as aluminum). <\/li>
  • Diffusion zone: located just below the white layer, generally composed of nitrogen in solid solution and in the form of iron nitrides and nitrides of alloying elements, dispersed in the microstructure of the steel, with a thickness that can reach up to a few tenths of millimeters \u2013 which generates a hardness gradient in the substrate. It is primarily responsible for the fatigue resistance property.

    CLIN\u2122 processes can be associated with a surface finishing step and a post-oxidation treatment, forming a thin surface layer (0.2 to 3 microns thick) of iron oxide (Fe\u2083O\u2084). This layer, when combined with an oiling step, acts as a passive film, protecting the base metal from oxygen ingress, providing remarkable corrosion resistance to the treated parts (it can exceed 1000 hours of salt spray). <\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    CLIN\u2122 nitrocarburizing technologies do not release VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and NOx (Nitrogen Oxide), nor do they use PFAS substances. This ensures that CLIN\u2122 technologies comply with the strictest environmental standards, avoiding obstruction by European regulations such as REACH. Furthermore, with sustainability in mind, HEF developed and patented the ECO-CLIN\u2122 process, an innovation that enables the recycling of consumables, allowing for their circular use, reducing the consumption of natural resources, reducing the risk of shortages and price fluctuations of raw materials, and reducing the carbon footprint by placing consumables close to the treatment line.

    <\/p>

    For these reasons, both technical and environmental, CLIN\u2122 processes have replaced galvanic coatings \u2013 such as chrome, zinc, and nickel \u2013 and gas nitriding with several advantages, especially in the automotive sector. They have also been excellent options for enabling the replacement of stainless steel components with carbon steel, generating cost reductions.
